A few years ago a trip to the park to swing on the swings started it all. Now I’m a full fledged playground fitness fanatic. Today we celebrate that moment with a workout focused on and around the swings. Turns out there’s quite a lot you can do with some swings…
The first two installments were such a good workout it didn’t take long to get back out there for the third time. I was trying to get most of my ideas out there so this one is a little longer than the first two but I covered most of the exercises I was thinking of. Even though I’m sure they’ll be more down the road this will be the last (documented) dumbbell playground workout for a while.

I had such a good workout the first time it wasn’t long to get back out for a second trip to the playground with that 40lb dumbbell. I got through a bunch more stuff but I still got some ideas of how to mix in some weight to a playground workout so keep an eye out for the third installment next week.

I usually use just my bodyweight when I exercise at the playground but in honor of turning 40 in a couple weeks I decided to grab a 40 lb. dumbbell and head to the playground. I used it traditionally for a bit and then started to mix in the playground apparatus toward the end, resulting in a pretty good overall workout. There’s so much potential here I think I’ll be exploring this a couple more times here in the near future.
When I find a new playground I prefer to not go to it with a plan but just see what unfolds. That’s what happened the other day so I thought I would film it and show an example of what I do when I go to play/exercise at a new playground.
Remember the game you used to play as a kid? The floor was lava and all you had to was not touch it. I love that concept and the playground offers a great environment…
I’ve been playing and training on playgrounds for a few years now but just started this blog so I have quite a bit of content that I’ve shared elsewhere that I’d like to bring together here. Most of these are training compilations and sample full workouts but a few are of simple exercises and playground ideas…
When’s the last time you played on a playground? Think about it. Can you remember the last time you actually played on a playground? Not just went down the slide with your child but actually played. Not surprisingly It was yesterday for me. I’m almost 40 and not many weeks go by where I don’t spend a little time on a playground. Why? Because I believe in two things: having fun and challenging our bodies. Social convention tells us that we should stop playing sometime in the teenage realm and then most of us never quite do so again. The biggest drawback to this is that we start losing our physical connection to movement, play and creativity. Playgrounds keep all this stimulated and are outside, easily accessible and available almost year round.
I started my reconnection process when I became a father. When I would put my son on the swings I would think, “that would be fun to do” but then life would go on and only the kids would go on swinging. Then one day I was on a walk during a lunch break and saw a park with a couple swings and I just went over and thought, “why not?” So I swung for a while and it was glorious. After a few minutes I decided to do something I hadn’t done in a long time: jump off the swings. As I floated through the air I thought, “oh I’m definitely doing this again!”
Fast forward a few years, add a few kids and the desire to be an American Ninja Warrior and you have the Playground Ninja.
I hope to use this as a platform for sharing my experience both in play and in training so that we can start inspiring a little bit more fun and some great ninja training!
